July 13 (Terror on Trial, A12-14) and July 14 (Massacre Survivor Returns to Find Sorrow - And Strength, A1 and A11) (click on the preceding) brought superb reporting about the suffering of the people at the hands of the Guatemalan military and paramilitary.
Letters to the editor of the Chronicle - one good response - can be done by e-mail. Go to www.sfgate.com and scroll down to "Feedback" in the left hand column.
Today I received a letter from Rep. Tom Lantos with strong language:
"On May 18 I voted for the Moakley amendment to oppose the efforts of the Department of Defense to reestablish the School of the Americas under a different name with only minor, cosmetic changes. While this measure failed by a narrow margin, I will continue to work with my congressional colleagues to ensure that America's commitment to human rights at home and abroad will no longer be blemished by our sponsorship of this school."
It is encouraging to me to have him on record with this analysis and commitment to closing the SOA under a different name.

I just wanted to let you know that I have received my reporting date to the Federal Prison Camp at Lexington, and it is July 31, just 2 weeks from today. I found this site today which seems to be the best I've ever seen on the legislative part of the Colombia Aid Package. My read is that letters to Senators about the matter are appropriate for some time to come because the Senate floor debate is still to come. Then a Conference Committeee to reconcile the differences between the House and Senate.
Anyone interested in following this regularly for the benefit of all of us?
