Event news from Marilyn Langlois of Haiti Action:
-- Participate with us in coordinated protests in U.S. and Canadian cities to condemn the U.N. massacre in Cite Soleil, Haiti. Cite Soleil has been the focus of attacks by both UN forces and the Haitian police because it remains a powerful base of support for the democratically elected President Jean-Bertrand Aristide and the Lavalas movement. James Foley labeled Haitian grassroots activists as "terrorists" and "gang members," sending a clear signal that it was now open season on civilians. Since a U.S.-orchestrated coup overthrew the democratic government in February 2004, a United Nations force of 7500 troops has occupied Haiti. The U.N. has supported the coup regime, which has killed and imprisoned thousands of innocent people. As the U.N. mouths its concerns for human rights around the world, it attacks the poorest communities in Haiti and backs up the violent repression carried out by the Haitian police. Brazil continues to do the bidding of the United States by heading-up this brutal U.N. military operation in Haiti. Please join us:

of us will be traveling to other parts of the country and the world. We decided to bring information about our movement and spread the word our goals to those we visit during the summer.
-- Also at that meeting, Dale Sorenson of the Marin Interfaith Task Force on the Americas related a compelling story about her trip to Venezuela, and spoke about the following:
-- This year marks the 25th anniversary of the assassinations of Archbishop Romero and the Maryknoll and Ursuline missionaries in El Salvador at the hands of graduates of the SOA. To mark this occasion, peace activists from the Americas will gather in Venezuela--the only country in the hemisphere that refuses to send troops to this "School of Assassins" -- to honor the lives of these martyrs, to celebrate their legacy of hope and to plan for a lasting peace in the region. An ecumenical commemoration led by Fr. Roy Bourgeois to honor the lives of Monsenor Romero, Sisters Ita Ford, Maura Clark, Dorothy Kazel and Lay Missioner Jean Donovan called "Resucitado en El Pueblo" will be held on Friday, July 29 thru Sunday, July 31, 2005 in Caracas, Venezuela.
If you are interested in being a part of this event, and would like to join a delegation of faith-based folks with a concern for human rights, and an opportunity to interact with Venezuelans, government leaders and attend the major conference on human rights initiated by Fr. Bourgeois, please contact Maryknoll Lay Missioner Lisa Sullivan at lisavenezuela@gmail.com.
