A center of non violence, democracy and human rights in a world of conflict, Refugio is a 45 acre refuge located outside Harlingen, Texas, USA. It was opened in 1986, to offer a place of refuge in the United States for political refugees from Central America. Now, refugees from all countries of the world are welcome. Refugio is also a refuge for a wide variety of wildlife, who find a safe and friendly environment. At Refugio, basic needs of housing, clothing and food are met. Those looking for asylum because of repression or oppression can find peace as they work through the process of their legal case, living with friends who work in solidarity for justice and peace in a small self governing community. A sense of balance is sought between nature and humanity as we live and work together.

I know Pío as a tireless E-mailer for many important causes besides his own, and we are especially grateful for the support he has given our Colombian Episcopal Bishop friend, Tito Mora. It pleases me to include him and his worthy organization in our modest group.
Pio requested that I quote the late Rev. Maurice McCrackin: "Refugio del Rio Grande is an island of hope and faith in the middle of the storm; a permanent act of peaceful resistance." The poet/priest Dan Berrigan once told Pio, as they were being taken to jail for civil disobedience (which is to say, obedience to a higher power): "Our generation runs on the shoulders of Maurice McCrackin". "Mac," Pio concluded, "was a true non-violent resister and friend of the poor."
Thanks, Pio, y ¡que sigua la lucha!Back
