Articles on the SOA
[I apologize, but the links originally
given no longer work, and an archive search failed to find the articles
referenced. A word to the wise: I learned some time ago (unfortunately,
after this page was written) that if I really wanted to preserve a page
for others to view, I needed to post it on one of my own 'sites, as sources
sometimes purge old postings. --Daniel]
A
SERIES OF PIECES were written in October (1999) by Roberto
Fabricio. An account of the vote in September preceded those.
Here are links to those four articles. They are not all anti-SOA,
but provide a balanced view of the institution for those who care about
both sides of an issue.
Personally, I think that the SOA defenders miss the point. Beyond
the question of turning out dictators, assassins and thugs, is it appropriate
for us to train police and soldiers, no matter how closely we may attempt
hew to educational ethics, who return to repressive regimes in Latin America?
We may not know that we are training psychopaths until after they kill
priests and nuns, but we certainly know the sort of dictators from whom
they get their marching orders.
Here they be:
"Committee vote keeps School of the
Americas open"
"School of the Americas under siege"
"Attacks and counterattacks"
"Opposition enjoying increasing popularity"
