Friends,
Hope you have time to call about this. At the meeting on Thursday SOA Watch West members voiced concern for timely action for the Colombian people.

TUESDAY, JUNE 6, 2000
NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION TO OPPOSE U.S. MILITARY AID TO COLOMBIA AND SUPPORT EFFECTIVE DRUG POLICY

On or about June 6, grassroots activists from all over the US will call their Senators to oppose military assistance to Colombia and support funds for domestic treatment. Join this day of action by calling Senators Boxer and Feinstein. Call the US Capitol switchboard: 202/ 224-3121.

ASK THEM TO:
          1. OPPOSE THE PORTION THAT PROVIDES MILITARY AID TO COLOMBIA
          2. SUPPORT SENATOR WELLSTONE'S AMENDMENT THAT SHIFTS FUNDS FOR MILITARY AID TO DRUG PREVENTION AND TREATMENT PROGRAMS HERE.
          3. RETAIN STRONG HUMAN RIGHTS CONDITIONS ALREADY IN THE BILL.
          4. SUPPORT AMENDMENTS THAT INCREASE HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE FOR COLOMBIA'S 1.8 MILLION INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSONS.

The Senate is preparing to vote on an US aid package to Colombia amounting to over $1 billion. The majority of aid will go to the most abusive military in the Western Hemisphere and pull the US into a un-winable counterinsurgency war. Moreover, it will promote an ineffective drug policy that has failed for over a decade.

Note: Colombia is the country with the most graduates from the School of the Americas - over 10,000.

Folks:
Carolyn Scarr of EPI/CALC sent me these two E-mails regarding Mumia Abu-Jamal. This is a contraversial subject; I admit that the hit piece laast year on CBS's "Sixty Minutes" gave me pause. But the point has always been, give the guy a fair trial! Read the following food for thought. If it's such an "open-and-shut" case, as the prosecution would have you believe, why is our government's response to entreaty and peaceful protest so completely over-the-top?! Check it out: Mumia Abu-Jamal.

Dear Friends:
We are writing to you on some very disturbing news that may already have reached some of you. We are currently in the process of exploring possible avenues for action, so stand by for more information. At the moment, we just wanted to make sure you all had hear the news. We are also sending you notice on how to help financially, if you can. For details, click on: Santa María Tzejá Coop. Burned.

Dear NISGUA Friends:
Last week we sent out an article about a community in Guatemala that is involved in bringing a case against former dictator General Lucas Garcia. Last Thursday, on the anniversary of their return and just 10 days after the announcement of the case, the community cooperative was burned to the ground by unknown armed individuals. On the request of the community, we have put together an action alert for you all to send to Guatemalan authorities. This case is going to be extremely important and it is vital that we show that the international community has their eyes on what is happening. We know that impunity still exists and we will not tolerate it.

Dear Friends,

I pass this on from my friend, Carloyn Scarr of EPI/CALC, the 125th signatator of the copy of the petition forwarded to me. My parents knew Cesar Chavez, marched and picketed with him. Please join my mother and I and countless others in seeking to honor this great man.

Here is the message I received:

"State Senator Richard Polanco has introduced Senate Bill SB 984 in the 1999-2000 session, which would make March 31 a paid, state holiday for Cesar Chavez. It's time that Cesar and the farm worker movement got the recognition it deserves. Having a paid holiday would also give students the opportunity to learn of the struggles Cesar fought for, and those that continue to keep farm workers living in poverty.

"The following is a petition you can sign if you are a California resident. Simply add your name, city and zip code to the list, and forward the list to everyone you know.

"DON'T WORRY ABOUT DUPLICATES This is being forwarded to several people at once to add their names to the petition. It won't matter if many people receive the same list as we are keeping track of the names and lists.

"**** If you sign, please forward on to others. If not, please don't kill it-send it to the email address listed here:.

"**** If you happen to be the 150th, 200th, 250th, etc. signer of this petition, please forward a copy to: so we can keep track of the lists and organize them. Forward this to everyone you know, and help us win this holiday! For more info call 415-674-1884. Si Se Puede!

"I support Senate Bill SB 984 as introduced by the Honorable Senator Richard Polanco, which would provide that March 31 be a judiciary holiday, a required holiday for schools and community colleges, and a paid holiday for state employees." From:

Caroly Scarr of EPI writes:

Dear friends,
Please take the time to call your senator and ask them to work AGAINST the Ashcroft ammendment. Details below. Basically some children with a mental illness will sometimes act in ways that require them to be in special education settings. The ammendment will lift the obligation from the school district to provide for the special education of children whose illness sometimes leads them to violent behavior. And if school districts aren't required to provide services, they won't.
