Border between Colombia and Venezuela in red alert

Australia-based activist warns that a major crisis is building up in the border region between Colombia and Venezuela. According to Eli de las Corrientes of the Bolivarian Movement for the New Colombia, a US-inspired alliance between Colombian paramilitary forces and Venezuela's  elite aim tooverthrow the government of Hugo Chavez.

Speaking at a conference held Friday in Sydney, Australia, spokesperson Eli de las Corrientes from the Bolivarian  Movement for the New Colombia, said that a major crisis is building up in the border region between Colombia and  Venezuela.

As an example, Eli de la Corrientes mentioned last months failed attempt by Colombian paramilitaries to attack military  barracks in Caracas and assassinate Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez.

"The Colombian and Venezuelan borders are in red alert due to Colombian paramilitaries' conspiracy. They represent Venezuela's oligarchy's interests and aim to overthrow the constitutional president of this country, Hugo Chavez", Eli de las Corrientes told the audience at the conference, which was organised by the Australian Communist League.

He called the alliance between Colombia's army-backed paramilitaries and Venezuela's elite a spearhead of US imperialism aimed to crush the revolutionary Bolivarian Movement in both countries.

"Both confronted forces are situating themselves in the Colombian-Venezuelan borders where at  some point in time they will dispute for the control of the political, economical and social power.   In the frontier between Colombia and Venezuela there is the law of the jungle; no one commands  and crime and violence are the daily news in the media, which serves to pave the way to give the final knock against President Hugo Chavez, de la Corrientes argued.

He also warned that new anti-terrorist laws in Colombia will pave the way for a fascist  dictatorship in this country.

"Colombia is not only sinking in a complete chaos, but also in the hands of fascists who respond to the orders of the founder of the paramilitaries groups in that country, [President] Alvaro Uribe. The legislation will give super-powers to the Colombian military.  For example, it is enough for someone to be suspicious to be condemned to a few years of jail. This is without mentioning the  disproportionate number of people disappeared, executed or tortured", he said.

According to de la Corrientes, the Colombian guerrilla movement FARC and it's clandestine political movement, together with Venezuela's Bolivarian revolutionary movement led by Hugo Chavez represent a hope of change in Latin America.

"This is how, in the Colombian and Venezuelan border region, a new history waits to be written.  A new socialist history will be written without divisions that will definitely influence countries such as Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia", he said.

They accused her of being in charge of Iraqi bioweapons. But it may be that her real crime is exposing the effects of Gulf War I and US sanctions.

On the detention of Dr. Huda S. Ammash

The U.S. publishers of Dr. Huda S. Ammash assert that there may be political motivations for her detention on Monday, May 5 in Baghdad by the U.S. military on allegations that she oversaw Iraq's purported development of biological weapons. Dr. Ammash, Dean of Baghdad University, is the author of "Toxic Pollution, the Gulf War, and Sanctions," a peer reviewed research paper published in "Iraq Under Siege" (South End Press, 2002) an anthology that examined the effects of the Gulf War and sanctions on Iraq.

United Nations Monitoring, Verification and Inspection Commission (UNMOVIC) spokesperson Hiro Ueki has confirmed to South End Press that based on earlier research "UNMOVIC did not single Dr. Ammash out for interviews because UNMOVIC did not have clear evidence to link Dr. Ammash to BW [biological weapons] programs" when visiting Baghdad
University on January 13th, 2003.

"We are outraged at the U.S.'s extra-legal detention of Dr. Ammash and its plans to interrogate her. We demand that Dr. Ammash be released immediately," said co-publisher Alexander Dwinell. "The U.S. government is trying to silence Dr. Ammash's outspoken criticism of the U.S. role in causing cancers and other illnesses in Iraq through its own use of biologically hazardous weapons such as radioactive deleted uranium."

Dr. Ammash, an environmental biologist and professor at Baghdad University, received her Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. She has earned international respect for her publications, particularly her documentation of the rise in cancers among Iraqi children and war veterans since the Gulf War. In "Iraq Under Siege" she writes: "Iraqi death rates have increased significantly, with cancer representing a significant cause of mortality, especially in the south and among children."

When visited in Baghdad by a group of NGO representatives and former UN officials in January 2003, Dr. Ammash stated: "People here bear every respect for Western people and Western civilization. We respect your technological accomplishments and your values..Yet hatred is being manufactured by some to engineer a clash of civilizations."

Dr. Ammash's other publications include: "Impact of Gulf War Pollution in the Spread of Infectious Diseases in Iraq," (Soli Al-Mondo, Rome, 1999), and "Electromagnetic, Chemical, and Microbial Pollution Resulting

from "War and Embargo, and Its Impact on the Environment and Health,"
Journal of the [Iraqi] Academy of Science, 1997.
